Why would I want to change the image that came with my VU STB to the Blackhole image. What are the advantages and disadvantages.

I think the question is not advantages, but i think you should try some images and use the one the can adapt in the better way to you needs.
I think only after try some you can choose the one you like most.
There are many thinks the characterize an img: speed, stability, graphic, addon server, forum support ...
