Codecs libraries?

I've observed problems playing some movies. But my second receiver GI 8120 and mediaplayer DUNE (both LINUX inside) play that movies without any problems. As I understand the problem in codecs lib. Is it possible to chamge (update/refresh) codecs libraries? Or codecs hardly integrated into image or video drivers?
