Corrupt disk in my Vu+Duo.

sceptic

Vu+ Newbie
Hi all,

I have a WD 1.5TB drive in a Vu+Duo and all has been working well till the other day. The box was recording but I noticed I could not stop the recording or change channels etc. It was totally unresponsive to the remote. I ended up having to power off the box. After rebooting the HDD was detected but pulling up the recording list just hung the box. After another reboot I tried the boxes HDD disk check option, but this failed immediately with an insufficient resource error. A side effect of running this made the recording list appear empty now (without hanging) and there no longer appears to be /hdd/Movie folder. The HDD is still being detected by the receiver and mounted ok (showing 63% free). My reason for posting is to try to find the best way to proceed in order to save the existing recordings before reformatting the drive and starting afresh.

Any advise would be most welcome.

Thanks.

Do you have a caddy you can put the HDD in to and then check the files from your pc ?
The fact that 37% of the disc has been used suggests your recordings are still there somewhere.

Yes I do but I assume I'll need some software too as the native format is ext3 or ext2 (I assume?) and I'm Windows only. Any recommendations on the best software to use to a) view the disk and b) scan and potentially attempt to repair the disk from Windows?

If you plug it in via a USB slot windows should see it as a storage device you may be able to retrieve your recordings and then I would suggest putting it back in the Vu and formatting it.

If I remember correctly
You can try repairing the movie list
with plugin Enhanced Movie Center.I have not tested
but if I remember correctly there is such option.

Was also another plugin with this possibility
but I have forgot the name of the plugin.

I was mistaken about the movie folder being missing. It is still there. For some reason the box had altered the location elsewhere. However now its back to /hdd/movie I still can't access the recordings via the box or externally (FTP, CIFS) as any attempts to access the movie folder fail (timing out). I suspect this is due to an uncompleted transaction. Unfortunately I can't run the filesystem check on the Vuo+Duo as it reports a memory error with insufficient resources. So my plan is to remove the drive and use a Linux Live CD on a PC in an attempt to run to Ext3 checker (fsck) against the external disk to see what it finds and hopefully repairs... Problem is I don't do Linux so its bound to be interesting identifying the correct USB drive and running the command correctly!
