From where to format hdd in ext4? - vu+ solo se

Hi everyone, I'm about to replace an old 3.5" hdd connected to my decoder, I want to connect a 2.5" 250gb to be able to record on it. I remember that it must be formatted in ext4, can you tell me if it's okay to format it in ext4 directly via ubuntu?
