Hard Drive initialization problems

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me I have a VU+ solo2 box, I have put a new 500Gb Hdd in and if I switch the box off it doesn't let me save anything untill I have checked the file system, is this normal? Many thanks in advance.

Did you initialize and mounted the hdd for first time use
