What is HDMI - CEC ?

What are the terms Anynet , Aquos Link, Bravia Sync, Regza Link, RIHD, Simplink, Viera Link, EZ-Sync, Easy Link, Netcommand all have in common? They are all HDMI-CEC implementations of individual manufacturers (Samsung, Sharp, Sony, Toshiba, Onkyo, LG, Panasonic, JVC, Philips and Mitsubishi, to be exact).

HDMI CEC is an HDMI-defined functionality in order to control multiple devices easier. Through the connector pin 13 of the Consumer Electronics Control channel sent. The wiring for this is present in all the cables (which is mandatory), but the actual use is optional.

What can I do with HDMI CEC? This protocol allows multiple control "CEC-enabled devices " with one remote, but the individual devices can also operate together without the intervention of a person.

Variants of the famous brands are implementations of HDMI-CEC, but that does not mean that they all work together peacefully. Manufacturers are completely free to implement their own codes, allowing devices from different brands are not or are not fully together. Among other Sony is accused of this, but almost always operate basic functions (such as on / off).

HDMI-CEC has two parts.
- One is a common set to control "Power On/Off" and "Input Auto-switch". This is standardized and should be supported by All Brands the same way. The VU+ should support this as it is very handy specifically the Auto-Switch.
Auto-switch does what many SCART devices did already for years using a specific PIN on the connector.
- Second is extensive control of multiple products using a single remote. This is very brand specific and hardly ever works between brands. They all give their unique functionality a nice name which you nicely summarized for many popular brands. Supporting these would require a specific brand-selection setting per implementation.

Just to add:
- HDMI-CEC should be supported by all cables. It uses specific PIN's always being part of the HDMI cable. HDMI v1.3/v1.4 compliant cables just have a higher bandwidth for other features introduced.
- HDMI-CEC is part of the total HDMI 1.3 spec earlier versions probably won't support it.
- Some brands were late to support the Common Functionality and only implemented their own set. There were some disputes around it. Today this should not be the case anymore, using recent products. A flash with the latest image may help if available. Many products had updates on HDMI in general and on HDMI-CEC specifically.

Is there a specific configuration to be done when we connect the vu+ through a video receiver to the TV (all HDMI v1.3)?

In my case when I switch on/off it works well if I have the video receiver turned on. But the receiver never turns off by a switch off command. (Onkyo)
