I seem to recall a problem, with Black Hole 2.1.7, where you needed to go into the menu and select the original skin option, to get your hard drive working.
Try changing the Skin to the Default option.

Both of you seem to be having similar problems, and neither one of you is providing sufficient information.
You haven't even told us which model VU+ you have?
The make/model of the hard drive?
If it's internal, or external?
If you had the hard drive working, with a previous version of Black Hole, or other image, and have you recorded anything on it?
If it's new have you mapped the hard drive?
