kernel 3.1 vs kernel 2.6

May I ask which improvements come from the adoption of kernel 3.1 + Enigma2, when the "old & original" (DMM) still keep the 2.6.

In some way, this change brakes the linecode from the two images....
Which needs was requiring this change ? (2.6 -> 3.1)

Kernel version and Enigma2 version are not strictly linked.
recent kernel mean more stable boxes and support more features of our boxes.
It's impossible to retreive a full list of fix and enanchments from one version to another.
