low volume and no volume bar on screen

l lost volume last night,dropped right down also volume bar disappered off tv screen, had this a couple of years ago and l managed to cure it by tapping a code on the remote, have had a look online but cant seem to find it now, have tried 1+6 then 9 9 6 but hasent worked. open to suggestions many thanks. jim
