For some reason AVI files are no longer playing on mine. The files are sen by the media player and the advanced movie selection plugin but when you press the play button the screen looks as if they are going to play but nothing more happens.

You are browsing the wrong folder.
You are in the server upnp folder and not in the samba client folder.

I have the same exact problem with dlna sharing of certain MKV movies... Narnia - Voyage of the Dawn Treader... Twonky, Serviio, Windows Media Sharing.. all give the same strange result. Also after converting to MP4 or MPEG.. it just becomes invisible. :( very strange stuff.
And yes... it is in the media/upnp where ALL the OTHER MOVIES just work.. including MKV and 3d MKV SBS. please someone... post a sollution

you can play MKV from USB but it's necessary a very very fast USB device to guarantee the minimum transfer rate.
I suggest an internal HDD to avoid every kind of problem

Sorry but NTFS filesystem is currently supported.
You should mount the USB pendrive via Device Manager (into Blue Panel) and next play the MKV file.
The use of NTFS partition cause a performance degradation instread of EXT3/4 partition usage.
