Nothing suddenly working

Vu+ Newbie
Hey guys,

For over a year, I was running blackhole on my vu+ zero without any problems, until today... Because all was working fine until now, I haven't changed anything since installing blackhole. Today morning, all was working fine... but when I came in the evening and tried to turn on my vu+, it was stuck on a boot loop, it wouldn't let me in, I tried everything I could, but it didn't work.

So, I installed the latest blackhole version - progress, as I now can access menus, but when I try to scan for new services, it restarts itself... Now I'm completely lost.

What could I do to fix this problem? I've tried searching, but I couldn't find anything specific. :(

Any help would be appreciated!

Can you try your receibver on a different dish/LNB?
What satellite set up do you have? Fixed dish, several LNB's, motorized dish, etc..

Unfortunately, I can't try it out on a different dish.

I have a fixed dish, DiSEqC A/B, A is Astra 19.2, B is Astra 23.5

Try isolate your problem, by removing the diseqc switch, and connect only one sat position.
After that try the other sat position.

Verify your cables, and "F" connectors.

I'll try this tomorrow - thank you. But do you really think this would be problem with the dish? I'm not very skilled in this, but wouldn't it be more likely to be a software issue, since what my vu does is immediately restart after I hit search?

Would it be possible to uninstall/remove engima2 & blackhole to try a fresh install? I have ftp access, I'd like to try this before checking the dish.

Many thanks!

Though, reflash your STB with a new firmware version. before changing any hardware on your sat system.

Here, you have 2 options:

  1. BlackHole image, based on the original Vuplus code --> http://www.vuplus-community.net/board/threads/black-hole-3-0-5-i-vu-zero.36319/
  2. Open BlackHole, based on OE-Alliance --> http://www.vuplus-community.net/board/threads/openbh-4-1-vu-zero.35042/

Thank you, I've already tried the latest BlackHole firmware, no luck there. Just now I've tried Open BlackHole - still the same exact problem, once I try to search services, my vu restarts itself. :( Really weird.

I guess there's nothing more I can do until I check my dish - I'll do so tomorrow and report back.

Thank you,
Kind Regards

Another way to check:
Remove power from the receiver. Disconnect the satellite antenna cable at the back of the receiver and turn the receiver on. Try to scan for channels with the satellite antenna disconnected and see if the receiver still reboots. If the receiver reboots with the satellite antenna disconnected, then the problem is most likely software (image), or electrical issue with the box.

Great advice - thanks. I've tried this, and indeed it doesn't reboot anymore (haven't tried a 100% search though thinking about it).

Well, this would indicate that it indeed is a problem with the dish, but this is where it gets weird... I've tried it with my old (non-dreambox) receiver and everything works, I've asked a friend to bring his dreambox to try and that worked flawlesly as well - so I don't think it would be a problem with the dish, since it works without problems on other receivers... Would this indicate that something is perhaps wrong with the hardware in my vu+?

What more could I try to fix this, before I have to send the box back to the seller and ask for a replacement?

Ask your friend, the one with the dreambox, to try your VU+ receiver on his dish.
How are you scanning, for new services? Are you running a blind scan?
Try doing a few manual scans, where you enter the frequencies manually:
Code:
https://www.lyngsat.com/

Just came back from trying it on his setup, which is nearly identical - same issue. Both manual & automatic scan cause a reboot right after searching, nothing changes.

Please list your Tuner settings.
Have you tried running a single cable, from one of your LNB's to your Tuner, and then scanning?
Are you using 2 separate LNB's or a monoblock LNB?

Reboots of the receiver usually make a crash log. Would help if you could post this log, providing it exists.

Disconnect the receiver from the satellite antenna cable. See if the scans will complete 100% without the satellite antenna cable connected.

I forgot to mention, my vu+ reboots itself when I try the manual scan, when I try the automatic scan - it turns itself off and it won't turn on, unless I toggle the switch at the rear of the box off & on.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to exist, when my vu+ reboots and I try to access through FTP, there are no error logs in the media subfolders (unless that's the wrong place to look?)

Both manual & automatic complete 100% without the antenna cables, yes. I've even tried inserting the cable when it was progressing, immediately rebooted. On both mine and my friend's setup, but no problems at all with other boxes.

Please list your Tuner settings.

The tuner settings on my vu+ are:
Configuration mode: simple
Mode: DiSEqC A/B
Port A: Astra 1 (19.2E)
Port B: Astra 3B (23.5E)
Set Voltage and 22KHz: yes
Send DiSEqC only on satellite change: no

I've used these settings for the last year with no problem. I've tried to change them up, but no different result.

Monoblock LNB.

Monoblock LNB.

It is clear that the box is defective or your LNB or cables is not 100% good.
Take another LNB for testing with new cable and try scanning without installing the LNB on the antenna.
Or test with another antenna from your friends.

Well, guys - thanks for all of your help. For those that are curious, a month later I have an update.

I've sent my vu+ receiver to the seller on the 23rd April, legally they have three options: repair, replace or refund, since I have a 24 month warranty. About three weeks later, they've sent me it back, well - guess what? They've sent it in a worse condition than it was before, scratched, etc., saying that it's perfectly fine and it was my setup, so my request is denied. Bullshit.

Today I've bought a new vu+ zero receiver, it works perfectly fine as the old one did before. No changes to my setup, whatsoever.

I'm happy that I'm back to normal with my receiver, but now I'll have to fight for a refund on the old one.
