You are right. It will not work from HDD. I did a confusion with other stuff . I beg your pardon.
You can use picons only from USB or from box flash folder /usr/share/enigma2/picon

after some test, it 's easy ... just create a symbolic link (in telnet)...
like:
ln -s /media/hdd/picon /usr/share/enigma2/picon

anyway it's not a good idea to use HDD for picons or epg ...
