playing media files from USB

Ok done some searching but couldn't find the answer so hope you can help.

Trying to play video files off the USB, I have a solo and using rear USB port for HDD recording and wanna use front USB to play media files.

1 put a media file on the USB and put it in the box, went to media player and got message nocompatible media found.

2 tried to then format USB using format wizard but then laptop cannot see USB drive as it's been formatted using Linux.

What a.m. I doing wrong can't see how I'm supposed to get files onto USB to play using the media player
 
Ok do I stick with just formatting the USB in my pc and putting files on that.

I was trying to play an MP4 file I think.

What formats does the solo play, does it play mkvs
 
Ok I'm def doing something wrong here pls help.

I tried to put in another USB HDD into the front USB ,port which had other media files to see if they would play.

Then went to media player from menu and could not see the new USB.

Tried to go to device manager to see if I could see the new USB in there but it crashed and rebooted

As a rule when connections and disconnecting a USB do you need to shutdown the box too.
