problem updating my vu plus duo

hi all and thx for looking in

i am trying to update my vu plus duo to one of the latest images but everytime i download the file und put it on my usb drive, it reads the files and loads a new flash but when i re boot is sticks on the starting screen on my led screen on the box and the tv screen stays black.

do i need to update the kernel before putting the new image on and if so can somebody point me in the right direction
