recording problem

For no apparent reason my recordings will break up every 2 or 3 seconds. This will then be the case for any future recordings. Recordings made before this are still fine. The only way I have found to stop this happening is to format the hard drive losing all data. This has happened twice now. I did a disk check which seemed to take hours, showing no problems. After reformatting the box I get the message that either there is no hard drive or it is not initialised. Eventually I am able to get the drive recognised and able to record again.
I have a WD 500GB drive, any suggestions and a sat tuner.
