Streaming with DVB Viewer or other software?

I tried to use DVB Viewer Pro instead of VLC to watch tv, but failed. It couldn't open the .m3u file the Duo sends. You can also check this thread on the DVBV forum for info.
Is it possible to use other software, may be even MPC-HC? VLC is good, but it's not versatile when it comes to decoder/filter selection, since it will only use its own codecs.
