You can add picons from panels or even from software management. I find that a little annoying as you cannot choose the Picons that you want and you are always under dilemma of which version to choose: USB/Flash/CF/HDD ?
Therefore I perfer to do it manually:
1. Take the picons you want from ... (Google is your friend)
2. FTP them to the box on your hard drive (where the y should be) /media/hdd/picon
3. symlink the folder
and voila ! simple isn't it ?
