Volume control on S/PDIF surround ignored

Vu+ Newbie
I just went from a pair of PC 2.1 speakers, to a 5.1 surround audio receiver ,connected thru s/pdif.

When i watch a channel with true Dolby Surround, the volume control on the VU+ becomes inactive, i can turn it up and down, but it doesnt affect volume, except when it is turned down to 0% or mute is pressed, it is silent. All volume control must be done on the receiver now.
The Dolby logo lights up on the audio receiver when this happens, and in channel info i can also see the dolby logo is lit up.

On normal stereo channels , the volume control on vu+ works as expected.
If i enable "dolby digital downmix" on audio button, or in settings, the problem vanishes, but audio quality is significantly degraded.

I am not so experienced with surround receivers, but is this normal behaviour , or is there a way to let the VU+ be in control of the volume again ?

Setup: VU+ Solo BH 1.7.7

That is normal, the vu+ passes the "raw" audio signal to the receiver and that then controls the audio, hence the volume buttons on the vu remote not doing anything as the Solo isn't controlling audio.

That makes sense to me, i just wish the two volumes (dolby and non dolby) were closer. As it is now, i have to sit with the two remotes like dual wielding pistols. The dolby is MUCH louder than stereo, even if i crank up VU+ to 100% , and set the receiver to a fair level, when i switch from stereo to a dolby channel, my windows are breaking(allmost) because it is much much higher. I guess it is a luxuary problem.
