Very strange.
I pilot my Solo2 from 4mt and all works perfectly.
Try to change batteries or verify if there are other IR sources who can produce problems.
 
What TV do you use? There have been reported interference problems by several users caused by Samsung TV sets.

The Vu+ remote is definitely not crappy, actually it's one of the better remotes available. I personally have no problem to use the remote 4-5 meters away from the Vu.
 
I think there is something wrong.
VU + Solo2 remote works perfectly good.
Try it in another room SOLO2 without anything connected, the sensitivity of remote.

I noticed that my Solo2 responds to the remote for LG TV:) and back remote for Solo2 can do some job for LG.
