vu zero dead white led blinks 3 times - no flash possible

I'm curios to see photos of your box (top and back) and same from the box of your friend who had a Zero with a RS232 standard output .....

I think you are not reading correctly. He built the RS232 interface for the Zero from the .pdf file which he attached. He says that he gets output or data from the RS232 port on his friends Zero. He gets not data at all from the RS232 from his Zero. He does not say that the Zero has a standard or regular RS232 port.
 
locate boot loader chip on board, probably 4mb chip ( Winbond or MXIC mostly ) and replace with newly programmed chip, this might solve the issue.
