what format does the video record in on the solo2 and can you take it off hard disk and put on pc

I think it's .ts format, and you can very easily transfer it to your PC, either using the VU+ Control Centre or just FileZilla.
All recordings, on your receivers hard drive, can be located in Media, HDD, Movie, or just click on the HDD folder and it should take you to the Movie folder.

ts stands for transport stream and can easily played on your pc with vlc player.

The CONTAINER is ts, which is I believe is open source. The underlying video and audio streams will be whatever was broadcast. Mostly mpeg2 video for sd and mpeg4 video for hd.

You can browse the hdd via Windows explorer just like any other networked pc. Don't even need ftp!
