To record on an external hdd, if it is a usb one you should mount it with device manager in blue panel, if it is on a lan you should use mount wizard in blue panel.
 
For mount: blue button/blue button/device manager/red button

For recording: When You on desired channel press red button and choice option for length of recording how You want.
