Wonder if anyone can help - Ive tried to do this on the front USB and rear and it just ends up loading the GUI up and not updating anything. I have BH 2.1.5 at the moment and cant update the firmware at all. Hence me trying to do this first. It appears not to read the USB when booting up. Though when it has booted up and started it does recognise the usb as it says no media present on device.

Try using a different USB stick, formatted to FAT 32, and the rear USB ports.
Make sure your VU+ Duo is genuine, and not a clone, or you might damage your receiver.
What is your current boot loader?

Sorry, not even sure what the bootloader is. I bought this a couple of years a large online retailer so assume it to be genuine. Ive never tried to update any firmware though. Tried to update it to latest blackhole version and used 4 different USB's in different slots and none load up. It just cycles through and starts as normal.

The VU+ Duo is quite an old receiver, are you sure you don't have the VU+ Duo2, or other model?
If you switch off, at the rear, of the receiver, and switch on again, you should see a message, flash across the scree, displaying CFE V3, which was the last bootloader update, from 2011 - 2012.

That is the latest version, for the Duo 2.
You now just need to download the correct Blackhole image, for your receiver:

You might want to backup your channels, and bouquets, before loading a new image:
Use Dreamboxedit, or Dreamset, to back up your channels, and Bouquets:
http://www.vuplus-community.net/board/forums/vu-tools-settings.10/

Using Dreamboxedit, set up a new folder, on your PC desktop, and call it settings, defualt name, and location.
Once loaded open the dreamboxedit program.
Go into Tools, Options, and enter your receivers IP address, the the Test IP Connection option.
If it's working then click save, and go to File, Fast FTP Download.
Then click save, and your channels, and Bouquets, should be saved in the settings folder.
