xbmc now broken - any help

I have genuine Solo2 using BH 2.1.7.1. For the past couple of months xbmc has not worked. Symptoms include:
- xbmc screen judder and become unresponsive needing hard power off to recover
- using Genesis virtually every selected movie returns "No stream available"
- every repository I try to install from zip returns "wrong structure" and won't install

I have reloaded image many times, I have deleted /.xbmc and /xbmc from HDD (also many times), I have even gone back to a previous (BH 2.1.5) image - but always the same problems exist. I am reduced to using an Amazon TV stick for XBMC but would like to get my Solo2 back working.

It appears to me that I must have some file corruption - but not in the image (reloaded many times) and not on the HDD (ie the two folders I have deleted). Next I would want to reinstall Linux - but I don't think I can do that (or can I?) - so that ALL files are overwritten and back to state as shipped.

Can anyone offer any help or way forward. I just hate to be beaten on this.

Afaik /xbmc folder must be on /usr/lib/enigma2/python/extensions location, and of course, not in HDD.
For XBMC work you must have your HDD mapped as /media/hdd and on this root upon flash the STB from Virgin state ( i..e ) without backups = from scratch, on first XBMC launch it will create the folder /.xbmc.

So. Download a virgin and clean image from forum ... you can choose between Blackhole or Open Blackhole images.
Only, if you want, make a previous backup of your settings on using, dreamset or dreamboxedit.

Flash the new image ( that matchs your STB ), restore the previous backed up settings using the tools mentioned.
Map your devices and begin to set it up the XBMC configuration.
Normally when i do that, a lot of times, it takes me about 15 minutes to set it all up newly.

Next I would want to reinstall Linux ... WHERE?

Thanks for jumping in to help. The steps you mentioned are by and large what I have been doing. That results in :

There is an /XBMC folder in /usr/lib/enigma2/python/Plugins/Extensions
There is also an /xbmc (lower case) folder in /usr/share
As well as an /.xbmc folder in /media/hdd
and a /xbmc folder in /media/hdd

The latter two I delete each time I reload the flash, and the former two (as far as I know) are part of the flash and get reloaded each time I reflash the box.

If you flash the STB from scracth ... note: not a backup as i told ... you´ll loose all your contents on flash, i.e, the flash memory it will be erased completely and rewrited from new. Although, if you use a backup that is corrupted, you will flash an corrupted image.

Better is flash your STB with a new downloaded image and perhaps use another usb pen drive. Don´t forget to format on your computer the USB pen drive as FAT32 FS to erase all content in it.

Installed a virgin flash of BH2.1.7. Did nothing (HDD was mounted) - no settings etc. Ran XBMC is sees Genesis, select Genesis, it see movies>most popular, select any one and "no stream available". Could, of course be an issue with Genesis (but everyone else seems to use this addon). Loaded ABC family, selected any movie - won't play just goes to "END" in top left hand corner. Loaded CBSN News - works fine. Loaded Hallmark Channel, select any movie "Error: script failed".

Not sure what should work - my main interest is Genesis (which appears no longer to be in the "get more" list), but a "virgin" flash does not appear to resolve my problems. However, in the brief time I have been up I have had no juddering and lock up.

Got to restore my backup now - TV needed!

Your issue it´s not XBMC, cause it´s working, but the addons script for genesis. You must google for it ... if has any that works now with XBMC 13.2 for enigma2 STB.

Good luck!

Unfortunately, not so simple. Uninstalled Genesis, but once again cannot install other repositories - XBMC reckons the zip files are wrong structure!! Also on next running of XBMC (looking for a Genesis substitute) it froze!! Power off . . . . give up again (sigh) . . . . back to the reliable Amazon Fire Stick!! (this is crazy). Have to hope that a new version of BH brings with it a later version of Kodi - but still suspect that something is corrupt in my basic OS (not the image).

Thanks for your help anyway.

Just repeating one question . . . is there a way of reinstalling the basic OS (not the image) of the Vu+ Solo2? (Obviously the manufacturer can, but is the code and loader access method public?)

To clarify: as I understand it the Vu+ Solo2 has a basic operating system (Unix based) on top of which and by which the image is loaded. Can the basic operating system (ie as it came from the manufacturer - without an installed image) be reinstalled?

All the images that you load to your box are operative systems buddy (ie, BH, OBH, PLI, etc). If you mean the VU+ Open Source Image, sure, you kan flash your box with it but I cannot see any point of doing that!

All original Vuplus STB´s when come from manufacturer ( Marusys = Ceru ), it has installed an official image, you can find it on vuplus.com official website on repository section ( and you must use in it only that one that matchs your STB ).

Then I have a real problem. I have flashed my box with the original Vu+ image, then with BH but none of my muiltimedia addons work the same asa they used to or as other users with the same image. Even using their backup's my XBMC freeezes, won't load a repository, won't run Genesis, etc. I am frustrated that other Solo2 BH2.1.7 users report "everything fine"!

Ok now it's more clear.
You are looking for something noexistent software component.
Operating System into Vu+ boxes is Linux (OpenEmbedded distro) upto there is the GUI.
End of story.

To fix genesis --> Try this on telnet ssh session:

Code:
opkg install python-pkgutil

Will do . . . but not very conversant with telnet. Once "connected" (via VCC) exactly what command lines do I enter? If I just enter the command line you gave I get a return of "unknown package".

Install Dreambox Control Center ---> LINK = http://www.vuplus-community.net/board/threads/new-dcc-e2-1-42.3427/#post-159621

I´ve entered 3 commands, and cause i´ve tested.

I´ve installed previous the first command entered:

1) - opkg install python-pkgutil

the system returned me, that the plugin is installed in root and up to date ...

2) - opkg remove python-pkgutil ( remove the util )

3) - opkg install python-pkgutil ( installed another time, because i´ve removed it on 2) )

Note:

You just need to enter this on telnet ( 2 commands ):

1 -
Code:
opkg install python-pkgutil

2-
Code:
killall -9 enigma2

the last one the STB will restart enigma.

You're an absolute genius. Not sure why it failed when I last did it . . . unless a typo on the command line, however now worked, xbmc seems stable (will give it a full workout tomorrow) and Genesis is fully working as well!! Happy days. However, that missing package must have been part of my inherent system and not the image, because countless installing of various images never resolved this problem.

Very, very many thanks again.

After a bit of a workout this morning Genesis is working a treat, however returning to the xbmc menus and the system crashed again with a juddering screen and power cycle required. I have attached the log. Any clues??

Since your help got me so far, I re-did each of the steps. However, exactly copying your steps to install python-pkgutil I got (yet again) "unknown package" - see image:
